Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada’s two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.
In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a perfect example, a board book splashed with colour and a cute little protagonist. The story tells of a ravenous young caterpillar who's eating a lot so he can become a beautiful butterfly. I enjoyed the fact that without too much intense reading, the author has taught the children about the life of a caterpillar/butterfly. It has beautifully illustrated pictures of the story, in bold colours. The story itself is very easy for younger children with short attention spans to follow. I find the book gets children involved with the story. Because the wording is repetitive, after very few readings I found the children I was reading this book to, repeating the story with me. The foods that the author uses are very familiar to children too, and the children love to count the brightly coloured pictures. The book was very appealing to me as a new adoptive parent, and I can't wait to read more of this author's work, especially in this series. It is fun and creative. Kids will love the story. It teaches kids how caterpillars turn into butterflies. This lesson is taught through a creative and interesting story.
